Intersport Closing Down

03 May 2012 by Scunny Independent News

Lincoln based sports retailer Intersport have announced they are closing down their store on Scunthorpe Highstreet after 27 years.

Less than two weeks ago staff were told my management that the store was going to close, but according to sources no indication was given to them as to how long it would be.

Sources originally told VisitScunthorpe that there could be as much as 12 month's grace period, but that once the closing down sale started then the staff notice period would begin.

With the store now confirmed as closing down, things are looking very bleak for the high street, which is in desperate need of a shot in the arm. There is still much the council should do to help support the town center, and some efforts have been made as only last week plans for a new £5,000,000 museum were announced allegedly creating a "vibrant" town center.

In addition to innovations such as the new museum and the Portas bid for a new web site to showcase the town center, the council need to also consider practical options available now to help existing traders. David Redmile, a local shop owner has started an online petition to introduce free parking in all car parks, as opposed to the on hour which is of little use and operates in just 3 short stay locations. This he believes will encourage more people to use the town center and will provide immediate assistance to shop keepers, far more cost effectively than any other web site or museum building projects may in the future.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
