Illegal Use Of Quad Bikes

27 October 2011 by Hamst

The illegal use of Quad Bikes causes a menace by been riden illegally at terrifying speeds in housing estates and other public areas. The police usually receive a number of complaints in any given month regarding concerns from residents about the antisocial and potentially very dangerous activities of a few irresponsible riders of quad bikes, mini motorcycles and trials bikes. Not only are these people causing annoyance with the noise, but they are damaging the local parks and grassed areas in the housing estates and are obviously committing a number of road traffic related offences.

Passing through Manor Park, Wescliff, on the Sustrans cycle route this week I witnessed two youths on a quad bike tearing around the field with brazen disregard for the law and for the publics safety. They tore along the cycle/footpath forcing a group of teenage girls to scatter for their own safety. I took a picture of the two youths on the quad bike and was intending to note the registraion number but needleass to say it didn’t have one.

The police in the past have warned parents about the dangers of buying quad bikes for their children’s Christmas. Parents should think hard about the legal implications of letting their children ride mechanically-propelled machines such as quad bikes. While it’s understood the interest that some people have in the use of trail and quad bikes, they surely cannot be allowed to ride about footpaths and play areas with no concern or consideration for the local community. The question of legality of the bikes themselves has to be looked at too, it is illegal for quad bikes to be ridden on public highways without tax, insurance and them being registered with the DVLA. If they are riding on the park there is a separate offence of riding on land other than a road. The Police Reform Act 2002 gives the police power against anyone using a vehicle in an antisocial manner, to seize the vehicle, either after a warning letter or, if that is not practicable at the time, straight away. They will then potentially have to pay hundreds of pounds for recovery of the machine.

Sgt Jame Main, the Neighbourhood Sgt for Scunthorpe South has said  they had recently seized three bikes in similar circumstances in the Scunthorpe South area.

Anyone wishing to use a quad bike in an off road environment should look at using one of the local purpose built facilities, the nearest on to Scunthorpe being Kieradan Park on North Moore Lane. This facility just near the Scotter Road & M180 flyover caters for all types of off road biking needs., more details below.

Another excellent article by Hamst, Quad bike owners really have no excuse, especially when there's facilities near by.
