Hull band wins Scunthorpe Rock Open

14 November 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Hull band Little Switzerland were crowned winners of the 30th annual Rock Open in Scunthorpe on Saturday evening.

The indie quartet saw off five other bands performing at the region’s newest venue, The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe. The £14.4m venue is constructed on the site of the legendary Scunthorpe Youth Centre and Baths Hall – once described by the late, great John Peel as his favourite place to play when he performed regular DJ sets in the 1980s and 90s.  It was re-opened on Friday by comedian Bill Bailey who performed to a packed out theatre.

Postcards From Places, The Cave Toads, Hawk of Fury, The Rickashays and Handsome Bastards were among the other acts to take part in Saturday’s final.

Dan Harris, General Manager of The Baths Hall said: "Saturday saw Little Switzerland triumph in the Grand Final of the Scunthorpe Rock Open Final. It was a real privilege to welcome this classic local competition back to The Baths Hall, 30 years after the first Rock Open and to hear rock music and the roar of the crowd fill our state of the art auditorium.

"After all the months of hard work, we've got off to a dream start - and this is only the beginning. We've got so many amazing shows to look forward to now at The Baths Hall. Don't miss out on history in the making."

Little Switzerland frontman Simon Binks added: "It was a fantastic experience to win The Rock Open. it was made even more memorable by the venue; The Baths Hall really is a as spectacular as it looks. The sound quality was perfect and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Winning The Rock Open has helped the band to make a step in the right direction and having only been gigging for two months it's great to be able to say we won.

The Baths Hall will offer an exciting programme of theatre, music, comedy, dance and community events for all ages.

Planned acts include:

Kate Rusby (Saturday 17 December),

Jo Pasquale (Saturday 19 November)

West End production of Annie starring Su Pollard (Tuesday 6 to Sunday 11 December)

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Thursday 24 November)

Circus of Horrors (Wednesday 23 November),

Acts already lined up for 2012 include the Chinese State Circus who will be at The Baths Hall from 13 to 15 April as part of their first ever European Tour.
