Help Community Sports Recover from Arson Attack

08 November 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Just over a week ago, Conrad who runs the Ashby Community Sports Club suffered a devastating arson attack which destroyed his car, and the garage where he stores the sports equipment for all the free after school and evening sport events he organises for local youths.A3

Part of the equipment destroyed includes a set of portable floodlights so that he can continue to offer the free sports coaching outside in the winter. Any one familiar with the Everest Road area will doubtless have seen his lights on the playing field in the evening, encouraging teenagers to engage in sports related pursuits and helping to keep them out of trouble.

Conrad also runs rock-it-ball sessions, but has had to severely limit these sessions to just indoors sessions which obviously impacts on him financially as he has to cover the cost of renting sports halls etc to host the games.

I spoke to Conrad about this the morning it happened, and encouraged a reporter from the local paper to pay him a visit and try to get Conrad community sporting club some support to replace the equipment damaged in the fire.

When I asked Conrad what had happened, here's what he told me :

"I was woken this morning at 3:30 approx by the Police saying my car was in flames, i went across to see the garage where i have had to store the equipment door was buckled and bowed from the heat of the car, resulting in not only the damage to my car, which is now written off has also melted most of my sports equipment too.

As a result of so much damage including to the lights that made it possible for me to work on fields at night with the youths have all been destroyed, making it impossible to run the sessions again, as I wasn't able to pay for the insurance"

Conrad now needs help and support from the community to help replace the equipment damaged in this callous attack, and would appreciate any help or assistance, no matter how small or large. Conrad said "I have now got to turn the youths away after running for the last 3 years with great success because of some mindless Arsonists who have no respect for other peoples property, making it nearly impossible to insure because we are out priced and don't make money"

"Without finding some gold hearted companies that may be able to provide me with some small amounts of donations from several in a hope we may be able to restart again. I believe the activities has had a huge impact on many communities ive worked in and put many on to the right path even some I have no volunteering for me themselves. I wont allow these thugs to destroy what i have spent 3 years fighting hard for i will pick myself up again somehow."

Conrad has already received many messages of support from the public along with a few small donations, if you think you can help Conrad re-establish himself and get the club up and running again, then cheques  can be made payable to Ashby Community Sports Club and left at Ashby Police Station.

Just had an initial inquiry about setting up a benefit event by the Lincoln Imp and also offers of help from Twin Tiger's martial arts.

If any one wanting to help could email Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com we'll make sure Conrad gets your contact details so he can get in touch directly with you all.

Brilliant to see such a response from the community.

Can I just say, that the lights that are used on Everest Road and the Street Sport that runs on Everest Road Playing field is still running that is a council run activity, mine was private run activity in various area's. The lights I had was however the same as the Everest Road ones. All of the Council Run Street Sports are still running in the area's that they were before. My loss will only efect the Youths i worked with and not the ones the council work with, i just didnt want anyone to loose out on the council street sport thinking that they were effected

I dont know who to thank, but i have received an envelope from the Ashby Police Station saying that someone came in and left an envelope for the Ashby Community Sports Club, after opening it there was £100 left for us.

So I would like to say a massive thank you to that person or persons, your generosity is much appreciated, goes to show that the public or Company does value the work i have put into communities and we will rise from the ashes eventually.
