HUMBER BRIDGE TOLLS FIASCO
10 June 2011 by JOHN DONALDSONThe Telegraph reports that the Treasury-led review has concluded and the Senior officers at the Department for Transport are now considering whether to allow increases in the HumberBridge Board toll charges.
What amazes me is why the need for the Treasury or any other bureaucratic body to consider if tolls should be increased when a blind, deaf and dumb person could easily acknowledge that, given the bankrupt state of Scunthorpe financially, industrial business and jobs, it is essential that anything to help the economy is absolutely crucial and no increases should be allowed.
Not only definitely no increases, and (with the north and south banks also generally going down the tubes, attempting and struggling to get the whole area business, jobs and industry up and running,) but all charges should be abolished completely to really encourage the free flow of business and jobs.
If we are to survive this recession and bring Scunthorpe and Hull areas back to some semblance of prosperity, people have to have the dignity of a job. Business on both sides of the river has to be encouraged to flourish and succeed financially without the financial restrictions of the bridge interfering in the process.
It is clear to any right-thinking businessman or economist that any charges on the bridge is a restriction on the growth of industry, business and jobs to the whole area and as an urgent necessity has got to be completely abolished.
If the Treasury must have this money it should be recovered by means other than tolls and possibly by a local tax facility on the wider population of the north and south banks if needs be.

Could the bridge board simply stop paying the loan back along with its spiralling interest and either have a CCJ put on them (stops the interest) or just go bankrupt, there hardly likely to repossess the bridge and take it somewhere else are they?
Or am I being naive in thinking that and cannot be treated like individuals
