Greedy labour councillors oppose expenses cut

27 May 2011 by fans64

The Tories had to force through measures to cut Councillor's allowances and expenses after Labour opposed the motion to save the local council  thousands of pounds when everyone else is hurting in their pockets.

Liz Redfearn has't cut the allowances enough but at least we are not now paying for their meals.

It seems labour locally cannot break the snout in trough habit that eventually led to their chosen one going to Jail.

I guess visitscunthorpe just missed this story

Hi Fans,

Let me start by saying this is great, and thanks for posting. Getting articles other than my own on the site is one of the key objectives we're trying to achieve here at Visit Scunthorpe, so an alternative view is welcome and appreciated.

As regular's will know I (like you) wear my heart on my sleeve as far as my politics go. While I'm not a labour member, I will happily acknowledge being supportive of them in the last campaign for the simple reason that I did not feel that the conservatives were the best party to protect the interests of the working man in Scunthorpe.

What I have done today is create a new account on Visit Scunthorpe called VisitScunthorpeEditors and along with other team members have review the posts I've made recently, republishing posts which we did  not feel contain any personal, opinionated or editorial comments under the new account.

This hopefully will provide readers with some clarity as to what's been published "as is" on behalf of others with minor editing, what comes in to the news desk as a press release and is published in its entirety and what is in fact my own biased lefty opinion.

I would just like to add that all articles submitted to Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com are reviewed by our editorial team and have so far, without exception ended up being published. We would only withhold publication if we felt that the article infringed our policy of incitement or personal vindication. In a few cases we have asked for posts to be reviewed and resubmitted.

As far as us "missing" this fact, you your self posted an article on this very same subject just 3 days ago, so we felt it was covered:

However, thanks once again for contributing an opinion other than my own, I sincerely want the site to be used by all spheres of the community to present an alternative and independent view of the area. Hopefully your actions here will encourage others to publish their own views on the site as opposed to how some people seem to have taken to posting comments on other sites accusing Visit Scunthorpe of being a labour front.

Many thanks for the contribution.

It is refreshing to see such openness, changes and improvement to the editorial policy. Moreso, that there are after all those in North Lincolnshire prepared to respond honourably and positively to democratic scrutiny and challenges.

If only there were far more, within North Lincolnshire's local government and political establishment, prepared to take a leaf from the VS Editor' book!? Then I feel sure that, in the eyes of many others, the performance, conduct and standing of that establishment would greatly benefit and be significantly improve.

Bill do you understand anything you say?
I don't
Paul my comment was before the Council meeting so Labour opposition to cutting their expenses was not covered. I do hope I am wrong in thinking this site is actively ignoring labour greed? we were gaaged about Morley recently too and no editors expose comment has been made about his jailing yet.
I try to provide  opposing /balancing view as I am a great believer in visitscunthorpe as a community site and worries  me that it is becoming a labour blog .I understand the passions of those who run the site but ignoring labour greed, their policy of opposition for the sake of opposing, and mistakes  is unbalanced in my opinion

Fair points.

Great your are sharing them with us.

There have been two articles on Elliot Morley published since his sentencing on the site, neither by myself, and both expressing very different opinions on the man.

VisitScunthorpe its self will not be providing an editorial on this. I however will be in a personal capacity. You may have noticed we are trying very hard to differentiate between my opinions and other news articles submitted to the editors@VisitScunthorpe account. if you look at the news page, you will see it now shows who the author is, we've added that feature today.

The article as it stands is currently in excess of 5,000 words, which is clearly too big be accommodated as an article on this site. Coincidentally, I've been discussing this with other members of the team this morning, and have decided to make it available as a downloadable PDF for any one interested enough to want to read it.

The article starts in Liverpool with Elliot's early life, tracks him across the Pennine's to Hull, covers his education, work, election, political career and concludes with his expenses scandal.

If you or any one else have views they would like to publish then the trial is over, plea's have been submitted and the man is sentenced, I see no reason why VisitScunthorpe should prevent the discussion of this or the airing of your own views.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
