Fishing - good for the environment?

Bottesford-Beck-Scunthorpe-

Being a Dog owner / walker and long time resident of Bottesford I enjoy being able to walk down the Beck with the wife and dogs, we get to see all kinds of wildlife, The Rabbits and Hares, the Foxes and the Deer, the Birds especially the Kingfishers, the Fish and all manner of other critters that we come across.

Its whilst pursuing my walks along the Beck that I have over the recent months on several occasions come across a couple of shall we say Eastern Europeans fishing the Beck, nothing too odd you might say but these gentlemen were not sat in one spot trying their luck as per your sport angler, but more just cruising up and down the banks catching the fish and popping them in a net which unlike the regular angler was not in the water, one can only assume that these were for consumption at a later date.

Speaking with fellow dog walkers they said they have also seen them and one stated that they have been chased off the old Ashby sewer works pond for taking the fish out of that, a place popular with sports anglers and stocked with on all accounts some quite large fish, another fellow walker asked me if I had seen the group of shall we say non Europeans in the Beck the other day, he went on to tell me how he came across two youngish chaps in the water near the Baldwin Ave area, he thought it odd but it was a warm night and carried on walking as he made his way into the next field he came across two more chaps stood in the water with a net across the Beck catching the fish and putting them in a Polystyrene box which he said had several large specimens already in it.

It raises several questions in my mind, Did they / do you need a licence to fish on the Beck? is it legal to take these fish (not sure on breed, Rudd/Tench?) home? Is the netting of fish legal? Do we have wardens to monitor said activity? Would it be safe to challenge said gentlemen?

I've just called the Environment Agency about this, and they have been very helpful.

Firstly, the environment agency have told me that typically, use of a net to catch fish is not allowed, but there are some exceptions to this, however in the case of Bottesford Beck they are reasonably sure that a net should not be used there.

Secondly, it is currently closed season on open water, this means that the fishing of canals and lakes is fine but open water courses such as the beck should not be fished at the present time.

Unfortunately no one was available in their fisheries department to confirm this and not being an angler I am unsure of such things.

The environment agency did however say that members of the public who believe that illegal fishing is going on should content their incident reporting number at the time that it occurs on 0800 80 70 60 and provide as much information as possible so that they can investigate the incident.

You do need a licence for fishing in any water area, there were due to be spot checks being done in certain areas of Lincolnshire over this Bank Holiday weekend. Bottesford Beck as far as I know, has not been highlighted as a problem area so the checks would not perhaps have been done in that area. But I am sure if they receive calls for service the Enviro Agency will carry out further checks.

Despite the toned down and milder nature of the edited version it's clear you are more interested in purveying racial stereotypes than having any worries about the actuall poaching.Poaching has been going on down there for years, before the recent immigration boom ,yet you said nothing?

As I said I have been a resident down here 31 years and in Bottesford 47 and apart from a couple of 10-ish year olds about 2 years ago I have not seen any one else fishing plus the fact the Beck has only recently ( well over the last 25 years) recovered from being the Sewer farm over flow and there being no fish to speak of and plus when I said hello to them it was not an English accent I got in reply, I will leave you and the others readers to come to your own conclusion as to whether I was being racist or just stating what has been observed.
