Fire Service Refills Pond

06 July 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Refill

Local residents and anglers alike will be pleased to know that from about 4pm this afternoon the Fire Service have been pumping from the beck into the pond on Olive Drive.

We can only hope that this action has not come too late to save the remaining fish.

Well done to every one who has taken the time to get in touch with different agencies and have helped publicise this tragedy.

The response from the fire service shows that public opinion does count and that if enough people complain or make a noise about an issue which affects the local community then action does get taken, if albeit a little late in the day..

Looking around the area today, the majority of the dead fish have been removed from the site, and the water level is steadily increasing. Also a lot of the rubbish dropped in and around the lake seems to have been cleared away which is a good sign. Lets just hope that people visiting the site in the future remember this incident and don't pollute the pond in the future by leaving waste and rubbish in and around the area.

This evening I did receive a brief response from the Environment Agency, I'm not going to go into my thoughts of the totally inadequet response from the authorities on this matter at the moment, or the white wash which was published in the local paper.

I will however say that in my mind, (and echoing the opinions of  a lot of people who have contacted me about this tragic incident), the response from the authorities has been totally inappropriate.

If you have contacted the Environment Agency over this matter do please let us know via Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com as I will be covering this in more detail once I have some concrete facts and figures.

The response from the Environment Agency, laughable as it is, is published below as promised:

Dear Mr Rhoades

Thank you for your e-mails regarding the pond in Ashby Scunthorpe.

For your information I have passed your e-mail onto a specialist for advice.

They will check this information and respond to you as soon as possible.

If you have any further queries do let us know, as we would be happy to help.

Kind Regards

I will just conclude by adding that I included in my email to the EA 6 full size high definition photographs showing not just the dead fish but also the rubbish fowling the pond and the water level, so exactly what "checking" is required does on the face of it seem quite pitiful.

Just had an update from the council, I asked them about the long term future of the pond which as I expected they could not comment on at this stage which I think is a fair enough response. A council spokes person did however say they would be discussing the long term future of the pond with the Environment Agency and would be taking their advice.

Ashby Councillor Mick Grant did speak to me earlier and said that as far as the proposals for new housing in that area goes, the pond and grass area immediately surrounding it have been designated as being kept as a green area and that no houses would be built around it.

With regards to the removal of the fish, the council spokes person confirmed that it would commence on Saturday and may take a couple of days, however no specific time has been agreed with the contractor who will be removing the fish under licence.

Once removed from the pond, the fish will be taken to a specialist quarantine unit at Haley where they will be checked for disease.

The council have acknowledged that they are the owners of the land on which the pond is situated.

Many thanks to the staff at the council for taking the time to answer the questions which had been put forward to Visit Scunthorpe by some of its readers.
