FOR SALE - North Lincolnshire Council

08 July 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Picture 081I was very interested to read yesterday about the cabinet minister for Adult and Children's Services plan to privatise home meals for the vulnerable and to flog it off to a private company.

Currently hot Meals on Wheels are delivered by the WRVS to vulnerable pensioners at a subsidised cost. These meals are not only hot and ready to eat, but the daily delivery provides the opportunity for the WRVS to make a short check on the recipient which would otherwise not happen.

Yesterday the papers highlighting these changes were made available, with the recommendation that they be approved by Rob Waltham in his dual post of head of children and adult services.

I warned when the council combined these positions together that it was a bad move, and that the axe would fall here first.

Unsurprisingly it has, and explains just why cllr Waltham kept so very quiet in the council meeting just two weeks ago while his glorious leader lied about there being no further job losses in the paper that very same day. Indeed when challenged about the headlines in the meeting, Liz Redfern (Tory leader) did admit that job losses in the future were not something they could rule out, thus making her own claims of just 24 hours earlier a total fabrication designed to do nothing other than make headlines in the local rag.

It's clear from their budget that their sums do not add up, yes they can afford some free car parking and other luxuries this year to reward voters with, but where the money will come from next year is unclear... Or is it? Expect to see the mass full scale privatisation of jobs and services, departments merged, services degraded and tax payer's money squandered on free car parking and pumped into the profits of private companies. Oh and while your services are being pillaged and ripped out from under you, expect a nice shiny veneer to be applied by the local paper.

Take a look at Gary Day's blog, he explain's very clearly just what the tory statement "Zero Job Losses" really means.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
