Exclusive: Investors show interest in Crosby Hotel

01 May 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following the succesfull campaign orchestrated by Visit Scunthorpe to prevent the destruction of the Crosby Hotel in Scunthorpe, we've been given news of a potential exciting new project which will see the restoration of the hotel to its former glory. As some readers will be aware, Highwood Brewery in Melton Ross were manufacturers of the local Real Ale brand "Tom Wood", and recently went into administration. Following our campaign to save the Crosby Hotel, one of the saving graces of Highwood Brewery has got in touch with us to see what interest there would be locally in reopening the pub. Investors in the brewery would like to undertake a public consultation with people in the area to gather feedback as to whether there would be an interest in the hotel reopening as a pub and micro brewery. Plans include the development of the site to include a micro brewery to brew speciality lager on the premises, unique to Scunthorpe. The redevelopment of the Crosby Hotel would be along the lines of a Nostalgia theme, with the new owners focusing heavily on the area's past, and real ales. At this stage plans are yet to be submitted to the council, and are depending upon market research being carried out by the investors. One of the investors in this project told Visit Scunthorpe "The Crosby Hotel is badly damaged and in need of much repair, so we need to identify if there is a market in nostalgia and to find our what the people of Froddingham think about it". In relative terms Scunthorpe is a young town with few historical buildings, with the Crosby Hotel being one hundred years old this year hopefully this news will prolong the life of this building and help retain some heritage for future generations. The town has lost too many historical buildings to architectural vandalism, The Station Hotel of 1888 & The Majestic Cinema of 1927 to name but two, it would be a shame if the Charter Trustees were ever to allow the Crosby Hotel to be demolished in the name of progress.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
