East Midlands Today #1

07 April 2010 by moodybass

Having a couple of days off over the half term has given me a tremendous opportunity to instil the concept of democracy and the free state on my five year old daughter. What with the coming election, she's actually started asking questions, and as I wanted to impart this concept of democracy on her, as frankly, my house is not a democracy, indeed it is very much a monarchy - and what I says pretty much goes or else (it's the naughty step). As we all now, out there in the "real world" this is simply not the case and we all have the right to voice our opinion and convince those whom we elect to listen to our concerns. This in turn leads to only laws being passed are actually the ones we want and need - a very simple approach that proves Westminster Democracy is actually a shinning beacon of hope that goes around the world. Those in oppressed countries, run by fascist dictators, must sit in their mud huts green with envy. So here is my fist Q&A with No.1 following a speech by Peter Mandleson we watched on BBC News at 10:15ish. Me: So No.1, what do you think about the forthcoming General Election? No.1: I don't know. Me: But we talked about it this morning? No.1: Why are we having an Election? Me: So we can elect people who represent us. No1: What's a representus? Me: We go and vote for someone to represent us in Parliament No1: Whats a Parliament? Me: Is where we make up rules that everyone has to follow. No.1: a bit like when I'm naughty I have to sit on the Naughty Step. Me: Exactly, but we can detain you there without telling you why. No.1: Why? Me: because we voted for it. No.1:Why did you vote for it? Me: Well, I didn't personally, the man I voted for, voted for it. No.1: Who did you vote for? Me: Nick Palmer. No.1: Why did Nick Palmer vote for the naughty step. Me: Because the man he works for told him too. No.1: Why? Me: What do you think? No.1: You shouldn't sit on the naughty step if you don't know what you've done, you should stand in the naughty corner instead.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
