Council approves port development

24 June 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Planners today approved ambitious plans for a £100 Million port-related development in the area. Submitted by Able UK Ltd they have gained permission to build the development on the South Humber Gateway - creating over 5,000 much needed jobs.

The development will allegedly attract £1.5b of further investment and covers almost 1,000 acres.

the development will include transport depots, warehousing, external storage areas, offices, a business park, motel, and energy developments - on to be located at East Halton in North Lincolnshire.

The council expect the development to pave the way for further investment on the South Humber Gateway which will account for the alleged £1.5b indirect potential investment.

The council claim that the development will create 5,363 jobs (including 327 construction jobs), though there has been no information provided as to what types of jobs or who the potential employers may be. It is also unclear from the council's statement if the expected 327 construction jobs involved in building the development are included in this figure, or if they will be available to local people.

Cllr Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“This is a major breakthrough and marks the first step to attracting further investment on the South Humber Gateway. The site is the fastest growing ports and logistics centre in the country and has the potential to be Europe’s leader in renewable energy.

“This application is vital to ensuring the continuing development of the South Humber Gateway and I’m delighted that consent has been given.

“I cannot stress enough what a major achievement it is that we have managed to balance the needs of nature conservation and development with a large part of the site to be used for landscaping and habitat creation, and balanced with the creation of more than 5,000 jobs with over half of those being manufacturing jobs, is wonderful. This is fantastic news. It is what this area needs and deserves.

“This will put this region on the map for the right reasons and prove that North Lincolnshire is the place for future investment and growth and for job opportunities.”
