Council Refute Chav Claims

30 December 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following some inaccuracies posted on the Evening Telegraph web site about the origin of this story suggesting there is some form of collusion between my self and local politicans, please see my "About" page on my personal blog. http://lincolnshirered.wordpress.com/about/

Following on from our article yesterday regarding the inappropriate use of twitter by a council officer, we have had email and telephone communications from the council wishing to correct what they perceive as being some inaccuracies in the original story.

The council have asked for two changes to be made to the original article as outlined below, which have been duly made:

1 - Change of Title
Stating that the council had branded people Chavs does not reflect the view of the council. The title has now been amended to read "Council officer brands disabled families Chavs". This was pointed out to us on twitter yesterday by a member of the public and duly noted, however given the manner in which the account had been used and the lack of any form of disclaimer or otherwise I personally felt that the title was fitting. Having discussed this further with the council I have agreed to change my position on this, after receiving suitable reassurances.

2 - Removal of Sentence
We were asked to remove a sentence which suggested use of this term was common place among officers. The council has assured us that this is not common place and that such language is not used by officers. While the article does point out that this was the action of an individual officer, we've agreed in fairness to other staff to remove the sentence as requested.

In a brief telephone statement a spokesperson said "To derive this from just one tweet is unacceptable, we will be holding an investigation as to what has happened before commenting further and will not comment on individual staff cases."

In addition to the telephone conversation I have submitted a written request to the council specifically asking them to clarify what their policy is on the use of twitter and to clearly identify which twitter accounts operate on behalf of the council. While no answer on this has been forthcoming (one assumed due to staff holidays etc) I will be publishing these details in the new year as part of a larger article I've been working on a considerable amount of time examining the use of and twitter and its impact on our lives over the last year here in North Lincolnshire.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works
