Council Budget Meeting to be covered live

20 February 2011 by Paul Rhoades

VisitScunthorpe.Com's second live broadcast will be this week on Wednesday 23rd February commencing at 17:00. Broadcasting live from Pitwood House we will be covering the build up to the North Lincolnshire Council's 2011 Budget Meeting, and the proceedings of the meeting its self, including coverage of expected demonstrations out side. Hopefully we will be able to speak to some of the protesters to better understand what alternatives they believe there are to the cuts and we'll also be finding out more about the national demonstration in London on the 26th March, and the free transport available from Scunthorpe. Next Wednesday is an important date for North Lincolnshire as we will learn more details about how the cuts will affect people living in the area. From what we understand to date the council are looking at a policy of natural wastage and redeployment, and are taking a top down approach, unlike other councils where the job cuts have so far been bottom up. The Council recently completed a review of directorial positions and are now according to our sources reviewing the 44 assistant director positions with a view over 4 years to reducing the number from 44 to 27. It is unclear at this stage if a statement is expected on this matter on Wednesday but we would hope that the council could start to put more detail into their proposals to avoid uncertainty amongst workers and local residents alike. We are inviting as many people as possible to watch the live feed of the event here on VisitScunthorpe.Com on Wednesday and to also contribute to the discussion. As a result, we'd welcome suggestions from all our readers as to where they think the council could save money while still retaining front line services for the most needy. Users can contribute either using the twitter hash tag #NLCB (North Lincolnshire Council Budget) or directly using the web interface on the VisitScunthorpe.Com web site. The discussion is open to all, and we hope that this offer is taken up by councillors and members of the public, any one with specific individual questions or queries about this, leave a comment on this thread and we'll get in touch with you privately via your registered email address.

I've heard rumours that youth services will be devestated as the council are no longer commiting to universal youth services due to the cuts.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
