Confession time - I am an extremist

17 June 2011 by Scunny Independent News

According to Tory MP for Brigg and Goole, Andrew Percy, if I attend the UK Uncut demonstration in Scunthorpe this Saturday then I am an extremist.

Quite frankly I've not heard such stupidity from the mouth of a politician since Elliot Morley stood up and said "I didn't realise I had finished paying my mortgage."

The sheer audacity of this man knows no bounds. If you disagree with him you are told to "Grow up". If you dare to speak out against the status-quo then you are an extremist.

Well here goes for some "extreme" leafleting in the precinct this weekend...

Here's why the UK Uncut action on Saturday is so important, and this is why I have decided to go along and be one of Mr Percy's "Extremists".

(The following content has been taken from the UK Uncut web site http://www.ukuncut.org.uk/)

"The government cuts to public spending aren’t necessary!

The thing is, a lot of extremely wealthy people and big businesses have been dodging their taxes. Approximately £25 billion a year is lost every year to tax avoidance.

Some, like Philip Green (owner of Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, BHS and much more) send their money overseas. By doing this, he avoided paying £385 million. That money would pay for 20000 NHS nurses, or 32000 people to go to university.

In November, the government appointed him to help cut public spending. Unsurprisingly, Philip Green wants to cut a lot of jobs at HM Revenue and Customs!

Thousands of people think that it’s unfair to cut public spending when so much money is lost to tax avoidance.

This is why, across the country, many people are taking action against the tax dodgers. We’re all in this together, except the super-rich

If the super-rich didn’t dodge taxes, there’d be no need for cuts "

See you on the streets.

ANDREW PERCY is a VIOLENT EXTREMIST!

I will be there tomorrow but I am no "violent extremist".

Andrew Percy, however, is part of an "extremist" government trying to unleash the biggest cuts to public services since the 1920s.... and is it not "violent" to attack the weak and vulnerable in order to bail out the bankers and tax dodgers?

oooh Durutti, I'm a bit worried about your post provoking a complaint from Mr Percy!

How about this as a compromise:

Andrew, why don't you apologise for calling people who disagree with you extremists, and we'll ask Durutti to remove his post from our (cough cough) community news web site?

Deal?

But I will gladly remove this post as soon as Mr Percy apologises for his inflammatory and idiotic remarks

Is this one of those "i'm spartacus" moments?

A Politician who disagrees with your views simply throws you the title of extremist.

For goodness sake that’s a bit fresh coming from a politician. In fact isn’t an extremist just someone who takes their ideology or view or belief the maximum level? Wouldn’t the world be a very peaceful place if we were all Buddhist extremists?

This is ridiculous. Personally I would take action against him because of the context of the word. He is using the word in a derogatory way, not positive way. When politicians call someone an extremist they mean it in a bad way so he is effectively lumping you in with terrorists and people who threaten other people who carry out abortions. There are many more examples but with that one word he is trying to assassinate your character.

This is not something you should brush off. By saying and doing nothing you are consenting by default to being labelled an extremist when he has no grounds or proof of any illicit activities that could come close to giving you that label.

There is name calling and then there is this. sure we have a bit of banter on this site, we call each other idiots and stupid, but his use of this word goes just a little too far and he needs to be called on this.

I’m attending this event tomorrow with my daughter so I can explain to her what protest and debate is all about after she recently asked me about something she saw on the news and got curious.

the easiest way I could explain it was:

the people who runs things are picked by all of the people in the country and on occasion they do things that are so silly that we have to protest and debate them to make them see the silly thing they did and to get it right next time or change it right away. If they don’t listen we won’t let those runs things anymore and we choose other people to run things.

It was the easiest way I could explain it to her, but then I thought I could show her by going to the one in town on Saturday. It’s not going to be too crowded, it will nice and calm with just a few people there and it should be good natured and safe which is obviously important.

Debate and protest are one of the cornerstones of our democracy (what little we have left). I see this insult as a despicable way for a politician to label people who go to these events, in a veiled attempt try and scare people into submitting to the way they want things done.

For goodness sake what harm is it going to do, unless politicians are actually worried, for a few people with some alternate views and ideas for not having to make cuts in order to pay off the deficit air some valid ideas/alternatives that other people might like to hear?

This all goes back to choice again. Our government has come up with a plan that will cut billions in spending to pay off the deficit yet take more or less the same from us in tax. What about all the other plans that don’t involve cutting billions? There must be dozens of them but they chose the plan that would hurt the most without even asking us or showing alternate plans without cuts.

The whole thing is crazy and now this insult just confirms it. The ruling class just don’t want us to hold views that are contrary to their views and if it is then they call you an extremist to try and nullify your voice or opinion.

I have no trouble with doing that to a speaker who incites people to commit crimes. That’s just not right and we have laws prohibiting that type of extremism.

Seriously I would not take the MP's use of this word against you lightly. Of course ask for an apology first you have to give a person the chance to do that.

Apologies for my flippancy Neil, an excellent reply. I was just so angry at what he said and I guess I engaged mouth before brain when I responded. A very serious and well argued point you make, much of which I agree with (maybe we can argue the points of disagreement tomorrow).
