Company To Go Green?

11 October 2010 by Hamst

A local company is to explore the use of green energy as it looks to having wind turbine power installed on its site. Scunthorpes Bradken foundry, formally Firth Rixons, on Dawes Lane who have a history of more than 90 years continuous operation in casting production in the area are to seek out a viability study for the use of wind power generation on their site Wind Direct Ltd, on behalf of Bradken UK Ltd is applying for planning permission to erect a temporary 70m Anemometry Mast at the foundry site in Dawes Lane, Scunthorpe. The anemometer would be in situation for two years and will form part of a feasibility assessment for a potential wind energy scheme at the site. The mast will provide data on wind speed and direction at Bradkens site, this data will form part of the evidence base that is required to assess the potential of the site for a wind energy scheme and to advise the appropriate and sensitive design of such a scheme should it be considered feasible. The site of the application is currently located on land used to store sand, though this would be moved prior to the erection of the mast. The 70m mast made up of sections of approximately 3m lengths would be supported by eight sets of guy wires. Attached to the mast would be four sets of anemometers located between 40m & 70m at ten meter intervals. The height of the mast has been determined in order to provide the most consistent and accurate assessment of wind resource at the site. The foundry on Dawes Lane has been in existence since 1917 and for many years was called Firth Brown Castings before changing to Firth Rixsons, it became Bradken in 2007. Today Scunthorpe foundry is a major manufacturer of large iron and steel wear resistant components to the power, cement, pumps, mining, general engineering, mineral processing and quarrying industries.
