The club had stood empty since May 2006, it had been bought by the then Tory lead North Lincolnshire Council in 2007 for 800,000 using cash from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward. At that time it was on the understanding that Yorkshire Forward would cover the building's maintenance costs until March 2012 after this the burden would fall on the local taxpayer.
