Celebrity Expenses Claims

02 September 2010 by Paul Rhoades

I'm getting increasingly perplexed with our local official news source, the Scunthorpe Telegraph. Over the last few weeks they've been printing articles saying what's been spent where by the council (see phones article last week for a good example) and I think they're being a bit biased. OK, so the local council is an easy target, granted, and I suppose poking a bit of fun or satire at them from time to time can lift a gloomy day, but the very tone of this article smacks (in my humble opinion) of political manipulation of the readership. Todays article does in my mind demonstrate a clear bias, and is also factually inaccurate. As far as I am aware, the money for Denis Taylor was paid by Yorkshire Forward as part of one of their initiatives. I have in the past done some work for the people who were organising some of these events, and know for a fact that over the last five years a large amount of money had been allocated by YF to fund guest speakers for business networking, sporting and charity events all over the region. The very tone of the article is negative, and targeted at making the current incumbent labour council look as if they have done something wrong. They have not. The real irony of this is that the very same news paper has splashed these celebrities all over their pages and made money from it them selves! Talk about two faced, but that just takes the biscuit by profiteering on the visit its self and then pulling it to pieces later. I can only conclude that the editor of the ST is looking to support the Tory's in next May's election and that this story is one of many that we can expect which is low on fact and high on shock. Anyway, I left the following comments on the article, will be interesting to see how long they last for before they are removed, so I've posted them here for posterity: "Am I being a bit sensitive today or is this reporting a bit negative? "Dennis Taylor, who pocketed 2,500 for attending a Sportsman's Dinner" I mean "Pocketed" come on, its the turn of phrase I'd expect to hear if you were reporting MP expenses claims, not reporting on a job done by a professional providing a service. Surely Mr Taylor's visit to the region was not only of benefit to local charities here, but also helped improve the profile on the region. Forging our futures eh? Bet I can tell which party the editor of the ST is going to be punting for come next May with stories like this ;)" I've also just been made aware that Mick Grant has posted further details on this matter on his blogg, so it seems I'm not the only one a bit fed up with the local paper this morning.

Good article and bang on. I read this online and just couldn't believe what I was reading. I did a quick Google search and found that councils happily spend 70,000+ A YEAR on this kind of thing - makes 9,000 over five years look a bit more palatable. I didn't even know it was Yorks Forward paid for until I read this and Mick Grant's blog which says even more. There's a comment on the Telegraph website asking how many FOIs the Telegraph has put in and how much it has cost the taxpayer. Thoades, as pretty much the only 'competition' to our local newspaper is this something you could do and post for us all to see as the paper themselves are hardly likely to do it.

Glad, I've started the ball rolling with an initial question or two in what I hope is the right place. Will wait to see what response I get. If you want to know when this site is updated with new articles then follow Thoades on twitter.

This one really does qualify as the teacup in the storm, when you consider the impact of 9300 over 5 years on 70,000 plus council tax bills?! Hardly one to defend the blatant and continual bias, inconsistencies and double standards of the Telegraph's reporting? Or to lose an opportunity to expose the ST's lack of equal resolve and recent failure to report on other community's and Tax Payers Alliance doubts and concerns over the unwarranted increases in parish precepts over the last 3 years; putting additional increases of 50 on Bonby council tax bills. But before jumping to conclusions, I would be interested in the wording of the ST's Freedom of Information FOI request and more importantly, NLC's exact response to that FOI request. From experience, I would not put it past the ineptitude of this council and it could well be that the ST are reporting exactly what NLC has given them?! Notwithstanding, that another 'local establishment' credibility gap is being opened up and exposed. And rightly so!!

According to the Telegraph themselves back in 2008 John hegley's visit was paid for by the Arts Council - http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/news/Big-Brother-producer-visit/article-423492-detail/article.html I think the question that needs to be asked was any of this actually funded by the council?

Given that the ST have previously reported on these events. Whatever any inept wording of the FOI request and response, the lack of research and checking of archives, on both sides, could well lead to egg on faces all round?!

Just had the head of communications at the council ring me with an update, I'm going in next week to meet with him and get some figures about the number of press requests. I'll update the site with the details after the meeting.

Well done, great result. I see the Telegraph has removed the post you made with a link to this blog from their website. It's scandalous what they're allowed to get away with.

I see they are blaming Government cutbacks for our overspending local police force having to cut jobs, nowt to do with the New 30 million office block to park fat coppers arses in I detect no bias,I detect labour supporters whiunging when the council are put to the sword by the Local press as thye should do. They are only to happy when the Local rag pedals lies about Jobs which are only pipe dreams,Capatin Kirk and Grant are happy as Larry to have their mugs plastered all over the rag then.10k jobs were announced only a few months ago by Kirk, not one has materialised.TEN THOUSAND??????? Shameful political engineering ,so they can't really cry Bias!

Don't worry fans64, in the interest of fairness I'm looking into the facts about this proposal too and agree that on several occasions this story has been posted on the ST Website. From what I understand the 10,000 jobs are an expected benefit if the proposal by Able UK goes ahead. What the article does not say is that Able UK are for want of a better word an "Agent", and to the best of my knowledge would not be creating the jobs them selves, but are looking to broker a deal for the region so that an opportunity exists for an investor to be found to develop the port. As I say, this is something I'm still looking in to as I don't feel we have all the facts about it yet, but rest assured when I do have a better understanding as to what investors there are for this scheme, where the money's coming from and what jobs will *really* be created then I'll be posting an article. Considering this I do feel its the responsibility of the local press to paint this in the most positive light for the region to therefore encourage growth, investment and development in the area; however I do feel there should be more restraint on people making statements about new jobs which (to my knowledge at the moment) do not have funding. If any one has any further information which may help I'd be glad to hear it - usual email - thoades@hotmail.com

It's the hypocritical whining of certain local councillors who like to try barring opinion when it can't be answered with a withering(is that a word) put down that annoy me. Mick Grant couldn't respond to certain criticisms so barred me from posting on his site rather than explain his own hypocrisy over people crossing the floor. As I say they get great press for announcing over hyped wish lists as actual jobs so should take criticism for their over indulgence. Blackberry phones for every councillor? when any cheap phone can email and call people? I notice Kirk has never been asked about these jobs in the ST,perhaps showing ST labour bias?

Was unaware of your rule and whilst I disagree, will respectfully abide by it. I personally just find it hypocritical that this person goes under several different psyeudemns to openly abuse people as often as he likes, but there you go. Glad (Matt Gladstone)
