Carlton Street Car Park Demolition

15 September 2011 by Paul Rhoades

This afternoon the council announced the demolition of the Carlton Street Car Park.

Visit Scunthorpe reported back in April 2011 that structural issues had been found by engineers and that the car park was to close, and then on the 28th it was reported that the building would have to be demolished:

The Foundry Arms 4-7-2011

This announcement by the council rather embarrassingly came just 12 days after the Mayor of North Lincolnshire opened the Foundry Arms which has recently been refurbished at a cost of £250,000, and is build under neath part of the car park structure

Today in a statement on their web site the council have stated that they will be demolishing the car park shortly.

According to council sources this area will become available along with the demolished leisure center for developers, further questioning the need for the proposed out of town shopping center on what is currently a garden center.

Equally worrying for the town center is the fate of the Foundary Arms. Opened for less than a month, and now fenced off due to the dangers posed by the car park. Any one with any further information about the future of this pub should give Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com a call.

In a statement released on the council's web site, Chief Executive Simon Driver said

“The safety of the general public is paramount and we closed the car park in April as a precautionary measure.

“Since then, a detailed structural report has led the council to take the decision that it is best to move forward with demolition.

“This is a town centre site and demolition is likely to be a complex operation.

“The council is sensitive to the needs of town centre businesses and others in the local area and we will work with those affected in what ever way we can while the work is carried out.”
