Car Park Plans Anounced

08 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

We've know for a while that one of the pledges that the Conservative group made prior to their election would be to introduce free car parking.

It would appear that this has now been agreed. It is a some what contentious subject as car parking generates revenue for the council, so the "cost" is not just in terms of lost revenue, but also in the ongoing maintenance of car parks.

According to unofficial sources, car parks in Brigg will be made free for the first two hours. One short stay car park in Ashby Scunthorpe will be made free for the first hour, and two short stay car parks in the town center will be free for the first hour also.

Once this is officially announced we'll list car parks and confirm the information we have.

The decision has been 'called-in' by the Chairman of the Places Scrutiny Panel, Conservative Councillor Trevor Foster.

A 'call-in' is a facility open to council scrutiny panels to question the cabinet member and appropriate officers if there are concerns over any decision made by Cabinet. This means that the decision cannot come into effect until the Scrutiny Panel has met and has discussed the matter. The Panel has 3 options open to it; refer the matter to a Special Full Council Meeting for the council to debate, refer the decision back to the Cabinet Member for his reconsideration or to let the decision stand.

This meeting will be held on Wednesday morning at 10:30am at Pittwood House.

Questions which are likely to be raised are; how much will it cost to put in place policies to ensure that people are not re-issued with free tickets or transfer from car park to car park, and obviously where is the money coming from to cover the costs of the lost income and increased costs.

Andrea

So hang on a minute. The Tories have called into question their own decision?  If that doens't bring whole new levels of ineptness into play I don't know what does.

Information posted on site was sent into VS by member of the public, if you've got info from Cllr Foster then pls send it through or better still do something positive and post it your self, just make sure that if you do you avoid identifying direct source if unofficial or names of any council officers / employees.

why didn't this get done before now?
Why did the council shut large car parks and then employ parking wardens after creating the issue?

Bill,

Lets get one thing straight here, Andrea posted the information on the site because I asked her to, following a brief comment she made about the article on Twitter (which I'm sure you will have seen). I asked her to expand for better clarification (as I didn't understand it fully) and to also make the information available to users of Visit Scunthorpe.

I'm of the opinion that people visiting the site really don't want to experience this kind of idiotic ranting and hijacking of news articles. At the end of the day this is an article about free car parking in Brigg and the Scunthorpe Town center, its not about you or your opinions of other posters. I'm really quite incensed that you have chosen to attempt to hijack this in the way you have and in such an irksome, pointless manner.

If you want to have a discussion about political bias, reporting style or what ever you wish on VS is run please, post it as an article in its own right, but don't try to hijack another's legitimate article and then fill it with irrelevant crap like you do on the Evening Telegraph web site.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your response, its always good to get feedback from readers even if it is not very complementary, and I think it would be sad if you choose to leave the forum. Certainly I'd never ban you or any one from posting their point of view on here providing that it does not incite violence or racial hatred.

I've no problem with you posting your thoughts on how Visit Scunthorpe is run, organised or edited, or making comments of a more personal nature about my posts. On a personal basis I openly admit that some of my posts are provocative and that my politics are broadly of the left. I will say once again though that I am not a member of or supporter of the Labour Party, and while I did support them in their last campaign (in my opinion they were the credible opposition to the Tories in most wards), you will see many less than complementary posts about the Labour movement locally and nationaly in the past.

I set up Visit Scunthorpe so that I could air my views without censure which I found (quite rightly) happened if I posted them on the ET web site. It was a natural extension and some what revolutionary at the time to then invite posts and blog entries from others with whom I don't agree politically and I am pleased to see so many differing points of view being displayed on the site. Do I remove these posts? No. Do I challenge them and disagree with them - some times yes, but not always.

As far as making a grovelling apology goes regarding the Elliot Morley misrepresentation yesterday, I think that you are wrong.

I produced an article in good faith, having read an account in a national news paper, and on another blog. I had two sources, which I usually have for most articles. Based on these two sources I published. It then turned out that the story was false. I was alerted to this by a public post against the article made by Ian Cawsey, this was the only correspondence entered into, and as it was posted publicly, I reproduced it in full, undedited in my statement. Ian did not ask for a retraction, he did not ask for an apology. Both were freely given on my behalf personally as a poster on Visit Scunthorpe.

I did not make the apology to grovel with the labour group or Ian personally. My understanding is that they are mature enough to respect my editorial as my own work, rightly or wrongly, indeed take a look at the recent article in which I attacked the labour group for not attending the council meeting. Now they were not happy about what I was saying, but there was no retraction or changes to the article to accommodate their views at all, as it was me that posted it.

In the past, when I took information from the Observer regarding a statement made by the chief of Humberside Police regarding the legal classification of some drugs I had to retract and article then. On that occasion I immediately withdrew the article, didn't post any form of apology and was criticised for that. So it would seem that what ever I do in a case like this I would be wrong.

All that I have asked, and quite reasonably I think, is that if you wish to continue this discussion, then you create an article, perhaps titled "I don't agree with the political Bias of Visit Scunthorpe" and you instigate the discussion there, not here, when we're discussing carparks.

This site is excellent until Bill gets involved. No one cares. Can we please get back to discussing the issue and not 'conspiracy theorys'.

So what happened at today's meeting? Are we all getting 2hrs free parking or was it all a political stunt?

If you live in Brigg you'll get 2 hours free...if however you live in Ashby or Scunthorpe you'll get 1 - meaning that instead of paying 60p and having the time to wander in and out of shops at leisure in Scunthorpe town centre, people will now run in and straight out again..

The call-in was stage-managed by the tories, and we were gagged once again, only allowed to ask questions on paragraphs 4.5 and 4.6 of the report relating to enforcement of people buying more than one ticket!
If you want to read more on it, and my views on the process (eek I risk the wrath of Bill), but here's my blog on it http://t.co/BNZ0pa2
