Budget Cuts - Latest News

22 February 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the North Lincolnshire Council Budget meeting, commencing at 6pm at Pitwood House. The meeting is open to the public and is expected to be a packed event. In addition to the meeting in the chamber, two local action groups intend to stage protests outside the meeting. VisitScunthorpe.Com will be providing live coverage from both inside the meeting and outside at the protests, tune in from 16:30 either on VisitScunthorpe.Com or on twitter via the hash tag #NLCB In addition to coverage from VisitScunthorpe.Com, local news team Look North are also promising to send a camera and a reporter so it should be just in time for the 6 O'clock news. CoR The Coalition of Resistance will be protesting from 5:15 and have called on all trade union members and local government employees to support their protest. In a call to action sent out by CoR Organisers today, activists were called to defend the following local services: Closure of Scotter House care home Closure of The Lilacs care home Up to 550 council jobs to be lost or redeployed 21 school subject advisors on notice of redundancy An end to council provided universal youth services 2 care homes to close with negative effects on people with learning disabilities, older people and their families Leisure services and libraries under threat of closure or reduced opening hours Reductions in waste management and recycling Council staff parking charges to be implemented It's unclear if the existing redundancies and closures constitute the 535 job redeployments and losses announced last week or if the 535 is in addition to cuts already announced. VisitScunthorpe.Com would hope that this becomes clear tomorrow at the budget meeting and that clarification can also be given on the proposed reductions in the middle tier of assistant directors disclosed to Visit Scunthorpe last week. The CoR will also be looking to publicise the free transport provided by the TUC for their demonstration in London on March 26th, a bus will be departing from the Baths Hall at 06:30 on the 26th, any one wishing to book a place should make them selves known to CoR organisers. Further action by Students We have also just been informed that the North Lincolnshire Young Labour group is also planning to stage an event at the same time protesting about how Government cuts are impacting on North Lincolnshire. They maintain that the Government cuts are having the greatest effect on young people. In a statement sent to VisitScunthorpe.Com this evening, their spokesperson says "The removal of EMA from young people is the hardest thing to us. Students depend on that money and removing it is a tragedy. The proposal of Minimum Wage will make it even harder, than it already is, for students. They, the government, have already upped Tuition Fees which will make going to university so much more difficult. We have already had doubts about our own futures. For further details: check out their facebook account North Lincolnshire Young Labour

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
