Broughton Woods Revisited

08 January 2011 by Bernard

Following on, once again, from the Scunthorpe Telegraph's story over the role that Planning Officials are to take in deciding the future of Broughton Woods and the comments of Broughton and Appleby Councillor, Mr Ivan Glover, I found myself drawn to pen and paper. Whether the following letter will appear on the Viewpoint Page of the Scunthorpe Telegraph is open to speculation. Fortunately, there are other ways of airing ones views: Viewpoint Scunthorpe Telegraph Park Square Scunthorpe Sir, I was interested to read the report in the Scunthorpe Telegraph of 8th January 2011 regarding the future of Broughton Woods. Most notably I was taken by the words of the present North Lincolnshire Councillor for Broughton and Appleby, Ivan Glover, who said "I think it is good the council is responding to the requests from the public and that he welcomed any decision which will help to protect the future of the woodland." Both me and my fellow candidate for the Broughton and Appleby Ward, Paul Redfern, are incredulous at Mr Glovers statement given that it flies in the face of the environmental policy being drawn up by his political masters in Westminster. As Johann Hari wrote in The Independent on the same day: David Cameron promised us he would lead "the greenest government ever" but [s]ince he came to power, he has broken every environmental promise he made and then gone much further. In the words of Jim Paice MP, the Conservative junior Environment Minister, part of our policy is clearly established: we wish to proceed with very substantial disposal of public forest estate, which could go to the extent of all of it Driven on by their ideological Age of Austerity message and as a means of raising a miserly 2bn, the Government is planning to sell all 650,000 acres of our forests this is pushing the policy of privatisation even further than Margaret Thatchers regime. Prior to the 2010 election and talking specifically about forests, Mr Cameron said that he promised to "take a more effective and strategic approach to safeguarding a priceless and irreplaceable natural asset." He said that countries cutting forests down were "barmy". Now, the present Government says there is no danger to the forests in selling them to timber companies and the other highest bidders. They say that for years to come the forests will still be standing, that they will be cared for as well, and the public will have just as much access. Considering the Governments rapidly mounting number of broken promises, it will come as no surprise that we do not trust a single one of them - from the Prime Minister down to their local representatives - to keep any of their promises on the environment. Yours, Bernard Grainger Labour Party Candidate for the Broughton and Appleby Ward

Its a concern to every one who uses the woods that their right of access could easily be lost.
