BBC Humber Iron Programming

09 August 2010 by fans64

As a Scunthorpe United fan I get increasingly annoyed at BBC radio Humberside favouring Hull City . It's a commonly known fact that the BBC DAB signal and MW signal in our area is poor,Humberside management openly accept this. This makes it irksome to say the least that they continue to broadcast Hull city game ,including homes game on the superior FM frequency. It's as though they are deliberately giving us a poor service. All that Iron fans ask is fairness and that away games get a good coverage,BBC Humberside say that they do this because the Hull area is a bigger audience therefore they are justified. Here is my three word answer to that answer to that ,Public service broadcaster,. This was the BBC's own catch line "because of the way the BBC is funded" which allows them to broadcast to a lesser audience and I took that to mean that regional radio would give equal coverage to all areas not just the big conurbations. BBC radio Humberside's audience chasing argument is that of a corporate whore and the argument from the South bank is simply that they should fulfil the BBC's own charter. This government and the last sold their souls to the Murdoch(the Sun) empire and that has put enormous pressure on the BBC ,the last thing they should be doing is inviting more pressure from loyal BBC listeners It's a big issue for Iron fans yet ignored by the local press, perhaps because their sports editor guests on Humberside programmes?

I too tuned into Radio Humberside on FM last Saturday expecting to hear commentary of the Reading v Scunthorpe match. It has usually seemed to be a policy of Radio Humberside to feature the local team who is playing away or the bigger, most important game on their FM frequency. We now have a situation where two of local sides in the Radio Humberside area are in the same division whilst the third has dropped into non-league. Given that, who would I have expected to feature on their FM Frequency? With Scunthorpe playing away at Reading and Hull at home to Swansea I would have expected the Scunthorpe game to be on Radio Humbersides FM frequency with the Hull match on AM frequency, this was not the case. Why didnt I simply tune into their AM frequency to listen to it? I was at work on Saturday and the nature of the building and the surrounds I work in make it impossible to pick up anything but FM so I was left to listen to the Hull game on FM with updates of the Scunthorpe game at staggered intervals. After the football had finished during the Football Forum, Radio Humbersides phone in, one irate Scunthorpe fan challenged their sports editor David Burns as to why this had been the case, his reply was laughable. He said pre-season he had angst at what to do in respect of deciding who should feature on FM and it had given him sleepless nights at trying to be fair but the decision was based on there being a bigger listenership for the Hull City games and based on that a decision was made. The overtones implying that this would be the trend for the rest of the season. Is the fact that David Burns is a die hard Hull City fan not thrown into equation too? I agree with the author that the BBC is a public service broadcaster and their phrase because of the way the BBC is funded and allows them to broadcast to a lesser audience is certainly been over ruled by one mans prejudices.

I have emailed the ST newsdesk and many people have started a campaign of emailing the Humberside Talksport programme, not really getting anywhere. The ST are ignoring it al together,I guess their own journalists don't want to upset the sideline they have of appearing on their show every now and then

BBC Radio Humberside have confirmed they will provide match commentary on teams in their coverage area based on who are playing away, responding to concerns raised by Scunthorpe United supporters. Concerns were raised on the Iron-Bru.net about a perceived preference for covering Hull City on the station's main 95.9FM frequency. As well as Hull, Scunthorpe and Grimsby Town are covered by the station. The station also has AM and digital frequencies, although the signal for both in Scunthorpe is weak. In the past two seasons the Tigers have been given preference as they were in a higher division, but both Hull and the Iron are now competing in the Championship. Following a co-ordinated string of emails to the station, the managing editor Simon Pattern said that the policy of giving preference to the team playing away was back in place. David Burns, the station's sports editor, said that the Iron's away game at Sheffield United on Tuesday September 14 would be given full commentary on the FM frequency. Below is an email from Pattern "A follow up message to your recent e mail... Dear Matt, I thought you might appreciate an update on our recent e mail exchange regarding BBC Radio Humberside's coverage of football, in particular the concerns Iron fans have been raising in connection to the allocation of frequencies used for carrying our coverage. We have been listening very carefully to the feedback that we've been getting in recent days, particularly from supporters of Scunthorpe United. As a result, we have reviewed the criteria we use to decide on which frequency is allocated to each game that we cover. I hope that you will be pleased to hear that for the rest of this season we will be adopting the principle of the "away team" being allocated to our FM frequency as a first choice. However, I should also say that there are likely to be a few occasions during the season where the editorial story at the home teams match might need to override the basic principle. For instance, if Scunthorpe United were drawn at home in the Carling Cup to a major Premier League side - we are likely to decide to place that game on FM instead of a Hull City away fixture. That, or course, might also mean the occasional coverage of Hull City at home game on FM, if an important editorial story drove the need. I hope that this e mail update will help to reassure you that we do listen and take note. Yours faithfully," Simon
