A new era for the Humber region?

21 January 2011 by scrapthetoll

Being a north bank resident, i believe yesterdays announcement that Siemens see Hull as their prefered location for wind turbine construction is promising. The prospect of a few hundred jobs, provided by a world leading organisation, in a region that has long since been unable to even tread water, can only be a promising sign for the future. I am dissapointed that there has not been more movement on the south bank with the proposals by AbleUK to develop their Marine Energy Park, along with the associated ports and logistics developments. Despite this i fully believe that everyone should get behind the plans, and continue to lobby hard for more investment in the area. It would be excellent to see the likes of General Electric and Mitsubishi taking residence on the Immingham site. Clearly the bridge tolls need to be scrapped. The recent news may hopefully raise the regions profile when it comes to the government decision on this issue, again people must get behind this and pressure the government to wipe the remaining debt completely and look at new ways of funding essential maintenance and the remaining staff that would be required. The Humber LEP debate is one that dissapoints me. Both because the local council leaders on the north bank have been completely ignorant to the needs of business and enterprise, and due to the attitudes of many on both sides of the river that highlight depressing issues with parochialism. It is my belief that the government should give the go-ahead to the proposed business lead LEP, which would allow the leaders to invite local councillors to become involved, this could cut out the oft meddling councillors and perhaps may get things done more efficiently in the future. One thing is for sure, certain elements of negativity need to stop. The news for Hull and its impact on the wider region should not be underestimated. As a resident of East Yorkshire, i fully believe that the ties between both banks should be pulled closer together rather than pulled apart, we live in the 21st century now, historical boundaries can no longer be a block for investment and economic prosperity.

With regards to the Bridge Tolls, I today received a letter from Sarah McGarry (sarah.mcgarry@hullcc.gov.uk) at Hull City Council who is the officer in charge of coordinating the Bridge Toll Public Enquiry. This was in response to a letter I sent in complaining about the cost to me personally and the impact on my business of the Humber Bridge tolls. People wishing to make a personal presentation at the enquiry need to make their submission to her no later than the 28th of January, along with a questionnaire. Members of the public wishing to speak must make their submissions of no more than 1,500 words to her by the 8th of Feb. On the 15th Feb the bridge board will make their case available for examination at public libraries, the Guild Hall and Bridge Offices. Any one wishing to speak at the enquiry needs to make their intentions know quickly

I have already submitted e-mails and letters to the relevent people, though i encourage everyone to do so too. This realy does need the voice of the public to have an impact. I personally do not currently use the bridge for work, but i do use it to get to the airport for flight training. I have worked out that the ammount i have paid in bridge tolls just to get to the airport would have paid for a further three hours in the air!! It costs me more in bridge tolls than it does in fuel. this can not be allowed to continue, particularly not in a region that is known to struggle economically.
