1920's planning dream fulfilled tomorrow

26 April 2012 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

As every one knows, Scunthorpe is a modern town founded on Iron and the fortune of the steel industry.

What very few people will realize however is that the layout of the town was designed in the early career of one of the most famous and influential British Architects and town planners Sir Patrick Abercrombie.

Abercrombie was responsible for the layout and design of the town as we know it, bringing together the 5 villages of Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Crosby, Brumby and Ashby. He designed the street plans, for both the town center and residential areas and designating the parks and green spaces which earned Scunthorpe the title of "Industrial Garden Town"

This Friday, almost 100 years after the original plans were made, the Sustrans Cycle Way will be officially opened, linking the 5 villages and providing green spaces and pathways between them as Abercrombie envisaged.

The pathway its self is 6 miles long, costing £3.4 Million and has taken 4 years to build. The funding for the project was provided by Sustrans (a UK Wide cycle track project) and the National Lottery Fund.

Cllr Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for highways and neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“This is a fantastic asset to thousands of people, enabling them to leave their cars at home, get some exercise, take in the fresh air and enjoy the views.

“The route is already proving immensely popular.  We’ve seen a huge increase in cycling and walking along the route in the last seven months, with over 183,000 pedestrians and around 65,000 cyclists using it.

“It’s fantastic to see the project finish.  The support of local people was vitally important in turning the dream into reality, and I want to thank everyone for their help.”

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
