10th Good Dog Day this Weekend

07 June 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

This Sunday 12th June sees the council's 10th annual "Good Dog Day" event being held at Quibel park.

Last year the event was attended by approximately 2,000 visitors along with their dogs, and is intended to encourage and celebrate responsible dog ownership through a series of fun, family centred activities.

There is a "dog show" (of sorts), but this isn't any Crufts, and certainly in previous years the event has been good humoured, and a bit of fun intended to get owners and canines out and socialising. Contests include "Waggiest Tail" and "Saddest eyes", and prizes are awarded for puppies, adults, veterans and rescue dogs.

We're also reliably informed that there is the ever popular children's poop scoop race aimed at highlighting to children the importance of cleaning up after their dog.

The aim of this year's show is to ensure that dog owners are aware as to how important it is for their dog to wear a collar and tag at all times, in order to prevent their dog from becoming a stray.

Each year the council's dog warden locates around 400 stray dogs who are found wondering the streets without a collar. Many are reunited with their owners, but sadly a few are not. Being lost and held in a rescue kennel can be a traumatic time for a dog causing stress and anxiety which owners can avoid simply by ensuring their dog always has a collar.

The show opens at 10:00 am for entries, and will be officially opened to the public at 11am by the mayor of North Lincolnshire, closing at 4pm.

In another first for VisitScunthorpe, we this morning interviewed a dog, and spoke to Saffie, a 4 year old yellow Labrador cross. She told us she is looking forward to going to Good Dog Day this coming Sunday and hopes to meet lots of other dogs there to have a good sniff with, and possibly a bark.

She also pointed out the importance of making sure that when she goes out she always wears her collar which clearly shows her home address and telephone number.

Additionally Saffie has a microchip implant so that should she ever be found without a collar she can be scanned and her home address found, though admittedly she knew nothing at all about this and just gave us a blank stare when we mentioned it as it was fitted when she was under anaesthetic.

Humour aside, it is very important to make sure that your dog can always be identified with a collar and tag, and that if your dog is implanted that you keep your address up to date. This is best done by contacting the vet who fitted the microchip and registering your pet's new address with them.

In order to heighten awareness amongst owners of the necessity to ensure that all dog's always wear their collar's, the first 50 dogs to arrive on Sunday will receive a free collar and tag.
