1.2 Million Saving Needed

11 June 2010 by Paul Rhoades

So lets think about how we can save this in as painless manner possible, without having to cut back on essential services. Here's just a few ideas, I'm sure others will add to them..... Parking income - new this year 2,000 parking fines issued in the 1st 2 months of the new parking scheme, with each ticket at between 50 and 70 results in an additional minimum monthly income of 50,000. Over a year that new income alone adds up to 600,000 which by my reckoning is 50% of what we need to save. Obviously there are cost involved in this, so lets assume that 60% of the income pays for the service that's still an extra income of 240,000 this year that we didn't have last year! Council Owned Property Currently the council owns 1,020,000 which is currently empty and waiting to be sold, again the 10% crowd of estate agents will want their cut, and we need a quick sale, so lets knock 30% of the total amount and we are left with an income of 714,000 which while its a one off payment could go towards putting off the inevitable for another year or so Icelandic Bank Funds Yes, NLC put its money in an Icelandic Bank, estimates are that 5,500,000 was lost when the Icelandic Bank we'd invested in collapsed. Its estimated that 80% of that could be returned to us netting 4,400,000 which can be rolled up in to little bundles, put under the mattress in Pitwood house and saved for the next two years cuts. Now all that's before you start removing lunch allowances for Councillors, stopping the tea trolly at meetings, charging staff for parking in the carpark at Pitwood house (just think of all the parking fines there if that became pay and display!!), and not painting the bloody cycle paths Green, which is a pointless task and serves no useful purpose what so ever! Got a suggestion...? Add it here...

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
