North Conseby Moated House

21 March 2011 by Scunny Independent News

Had you ever heard of North Conesby? It's the area of Scunthorpe where Lysights Normanby Park works was built in the early 20th Century. What's more, did you know that there was an old Moated Manor House on that site? According to archaeologists the manor house its self was levelled around the 15th century, but the moat, which was used as a fishing lake, remained until around 1920. In the 1920's the moat was filled with slag from the Normanby Park works, and the site became forgotten. Close by was the local church which was also levelled and buildings on the site levelled and covered over with Slag. A project has been under way for several years now to redevelop the area, and as that redevelopment and landscaping has gone on, archaeological finds have been made and documented. Very little sign now remains of the church, but in woods near by the original grave yard remains along with its headstones. Disused grave yard, North Conesby, Scunthorpe The recovery and excavation of the moated site was nominated as one of the top 5 archaeological UK research projects in the UK by "Current Archaeology" magazine in 2009. Following the archaeology project in 2009 the buildings located around the site were covered with a protective layer of sand and the moat re-filled with water. Conesby Moat is now home to several swans, and stands in an area of swampy grassland behind the new Nisa Todays warehouse on Flixborough industrial estate, the road leading to it has been aptly named "Moat Road". Conesby Moat - Scunthorpe It is thought that the manor house was built by the d'Arcy family who took over the estate following the Norman Conquest. Also in this area close to the old church, an Iron Age Horse burial has also been found. An excavation between 1989 and 1991 close by also uncovered a series of Saxon buildings thought to be monastic in nature and possibly the for-runner to the church built close by.
